June 8 2002

The fourth SCAHTR event took place at Twin Hills Ranch in Lake Bridgeport, TX. This event was held in conjunction with the AHRMA National MX at Oak Hills MX Park in Decatur, TX.

Oak Hill did not have facility for a trial therefore we held it at the nearest venue which was approximately 16 miles away. Twin Hills has been used for both NTTA and the Texas State Series events and is considered an excellent location for Trials and Cross Country events.

Of course with the trial being held in June in Texas the temperature was warm. Not as warm as it could have been with the mercury hanging around 90 but the humidity was higher than desired. Therefore we had a "sweatfest" of sorts. When you see riders returning to camp after completing the trial with red faces sans helmets and shirts to cool down you know they were a tad bit warm.

Frank Chenoweth and I laid out the loop and sections. Since I have much less experience than Frank does he takes the lead and I make suggestions along the way. Frank was intent on making the Intermediate and Novice sections more challenging since, at the previous event, the scores were mostly in the single digits. Frank accomplished his goal.

We had a total of 8 riders show up of which 6 competed. Another fellow came out to watch, I think his name is Sam Ereckson Jr., and he wants to compete in future events. Sam has 2 TY’s that he said he can make 1 running bike out of.

The other folks are:

Bill Kendall – Ossa MAR – did not compete due to a recent leg injury;

Clay Fugate – Bultaco M92 Sherpa T – this was his first ever trial event and after some evaluation by Frank they decided he should set this one out as it was a little too much for a beginner;

Mark Cope – Sherco 290 – Mark rides non-comp and has been the only modern rider to attend all of the SCAHTR events. We have him considering getting a vintage bike on which to compete.

SCORING:

Bill Edgington - Bultaco M183 SherpaT - Novice - 1st - 22 points

Kim McCandless - Montesa 249 Cota - Novice 2nd - 30 points

Russ Corum - Bultaco M49 SherpaT - Novice - DNF

James Wipff - Yamaha TY250 - Intermediate 1st - 29 points

Phil Alford - Honda TL125 - Intermediate 2nd - 63 points

Frank Chenoweth - Bultaco - M85 Sherpina - Expert 1st - 72 points

A great time was had by all and pictures will be posted at www.texastrials.com  when available.

From Ft Worth: Take I-35 NORTH to HWY 287 towards Decatur. Exit HWY 114 WEST and turn left on 380. Turn north (right) on CR 1658 approx 6-miles to the Twin Hills Ranch on left. Twin Hills Convenience Store will be on your right just past the lake and dam.

The Twin Hills terrain varies from smooth, flat pasture land to rocky, somewhat technical trail. Approximate 12-mile cross country loop exists. Bring your skid plate! Excellent 60-acre camping area. Trials riders have plenty of challenging terrain also. No electricity or fresh water.
