NEWSLETTERS  PAST & PRESENT

                                                 February 2006 AHRMA Newsletter

Regional Racing finally got underway this past weekend at Burleson MX.  This is the third time this event had been scheduled, two rain outs during a drought just didn’t seem likely, but it happened.  Scott Smiley said all you have to do to get it to rain is have a race at Burleson.

Turn out was fair for an event that had been moved so much.  This time instead of rain, the temperature was 21 degrees – very cold, just seems we can’t get a break in the weather, but it warmed up to 40 something and everyone had a great time.

This years’ series will see an expansion in the states.  Arkansas is going to host a Regional west in Pine Bluff, and we will have an event in Tulsa, Oklahoma also.  Keep a watch on the TVRC website for dates.  Rick Jordan is from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and set this event up.  The track looks very good for all our machines, it’s not a super cross track!  Rick also has a line on an area we can build an outdoor track on north of Ft. Worth, we have looked at the land, and it looks really good.  The new owner is going to spend 4 million dollars on a road race track there, and wants to have us race vintage bikes on the hilly-side of the land.  This is going to be cool!

Forty one will be a joint event with the VDTRA.  We can not seem to get another National at this time, so we will do the best we can, flat track under the lights on Saturday night and Vintage MX on Sunday – Henry has made great improvements to this track, hoping to get a national.  We currently enjoy it for the Wyman Priddy event, Jim Pomeray says it’s the best vintage track in America!

Look forward to seeing everyone at the Jefferson National in April.  I know some will not be there due to the supercross in Houston, but that just makes it easier on the rest of us!  Come and ride… let Bubba go!  Don’s really made some cool changes to the track as we were able to race there in November ’05.  You will really like the changes.  Thank you Don for the shoot out, it was fun passing you at the finish, love it!

Well got to go, keep posted to the TVRC web.  Albert Newmann, one of our newest National Champions, is our new web master.  He’s doing a great job.  His wife, Judy, is going to be the new treasure, so expect to see them a lot.  Keep Carl Kellar and family in your prayers as well as Buck Patterson.  Carl’s son, is going through a tough rehab, and Bucky’s son passed away over the holidays.

See ya @ the starting gate –

Remember, turn on the gas

Attention Vintage 125 riders!  It's time for the third annual running of the "King of the Hill"
NF WPM NOV 2004 023.jpg (48816 bytes) NF WPM NOV 2004 007.jpg (57899 bytes)

Smallbore Trophy race.  The race will be held on October 23rd, in conjuction with the Wyman Priddy Memorial race, at North Forty Cycle Park in Sherman, Texas.   Last year we had 13 racers line up for the race, but only about half made it to the finish line.  Most of the really fast experts blew up in the first moto, leaving the race to the consistent and still running.  The top five riders from last year are invited to run their finishing numbers on their number plates for this years race. 1    Mark Brown 2    Skip Miller 3    Derrick Newman 4    Scott Andersen 5    Larry Perkins   Here is the latest word on some of our 125 riders.  Chris Barton is having some luck this year with his CanAms.  I've heard that his 125 really flies, and that he has a 175 that is also ready to go.  The 175 is legal for the race, see the TVRC rules for the "Vintage Smallbore" class.  If Chris can keep it in one piece for two motos, I'd put my money on him.  Current holder of the "Crown", Mark Brown, has been having some trouble lately with his KX125.  I watched him try endless jetting combinations at the Sandia Classic last month.  Nothing seemed to work.  Let's hope it was the altitude, and that the little green monster will be up and working by the 23rd.  Dave Allard keeps telling me that there is no way anyone is going to beat John Frickie this year.  John was fast last year, but was one of the guys that blew up in the first moto.  I hope that he can make it to the race.  Bob McNamara is another Honda rider that can really move.  I ask him about that CR125 everytime I see him.  Take that engine to Gary's and have the cylinder welded to the case Bob, that should keep it together.  I myself am revamping my TS125 for the race, making some frame modifications.  I'm hoping to get rid of at least a few of the "minibike" handling qualities.  If you have any good stories about bikes that you are working on for the race, please email me at chunx@azone.net I hope to see you all out there, and remember, Don't Blow it Up! Scott

10-16-2005

Here is the latest on word on 125 riders getting ready for this weekends race: The King is dead, long live the King! In a phone conversation with Mark Brown last Friday, I learned that he will not be riding in this Sunday's King of the Hill race, but may be present to relinquish the trophy to the new "King". Mark has been unable to get his KX125 working, so the crown is truly up for grabs. I received an email from Cris Barton last week. Cris said that he not only has his Can-Am 175 ready to race, he has a second 175, and a 125 ready as backups. Will he need all three? New member and intrepid DT-1 rider David Chapman emailed to tell me he is bringing a TM125 to the race. His brother Dusty may be racing a Hodaka Super Rat. Bob Lucas has told me that he may be riding one of Walter Parks' Penton 125s. Ken Walden, not one to ride true "Vintage" bikes, told me he saw an ad for a 74' Husqvarna 175 in the paper last week. He didn't act fast enough, and it slipped past him. Anyone feel like making Ken a "sponsored" rider? Let me know. I hear through the grapevine that Bob McNamara has got the problems with his CR125 straightened out, and will be at the race. Skip Miller plans to again race his 175 Jackpiner. This particular bike has been the most successful King of the Hill competitor over the last two years, Joe Busby won on it in 2003, and Skip took second place with it last year. I myself have done surgery on my TS125, and it is ready to race. In more unconfirmed news, I have heard rumors of a "Secret Weapon" that John Frickie will be riding. Hmmm?

I can't wait to see y'all on Sunday. Don't blow it up!

November 19, 2005 --- First Annual Texas State Vintage Motocross Championship

Sponsored by
Diamond Don Motorsports-Jefferson

Texas Vintage Racing Club-Dallas

Vintage Veteran Motocross Group-Houston

Diamond Don’s First Annual State Vintage Motocross Championship and AHRMA Regional will take place on November 19, 2005 just one mile from Downtown Jefferson, Texas. Over 250 riders are expected to turn out for this occasion. The event includes vintage and post-vintage motocross and support classes for modern and mini-bikes.

The event will also include Diamond Don’s world famous BBQ on Saturday evening at Don’s Hill overlooking the Cypress Bayou River.

Jefferson is nestled deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas and seems frozen in time. It is a charming town and an elegant reminder of a bygone era. There are over a hundred buildings in the city with historical markers. Nearly sixty historic homes and buildings offer bed and breakfast accommodations. Dozens of other historic buildings house museums, craft and antique shops and restaurants. The wide, flat grassy pit area offers great viewing of the racetrack that runs through the cool woods. Diamond Don has created a natural terrain track reminiscent of the early 70’s. Watch out for Big Air! The track runs through the 1880’s ruins of an old sawmill and along the Cypress Bayou River. This is a treat for the spectators as well as the riders. Pack up your entire family and come join the camaraderie and meet your Texas racing heroes of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Old guys on old bikes – still having fun.

September 7 2005
The Lake Whitney race held on the 4th of July weekend was, well hot. With temps at 109 we tested our ice chest to see who's would last the longest. I think my 40 year old Coleman was the winner. That's more than I can say about my Maico, Scott smiley put it to me on the last lap of the second moto for the win in GP great ride Scott! Joe Busby dominated in the post vintage . Joe asked for this day to be an event to remember his father who passed away this year. Everyone who remembers Joe senior knows how great a supporter he was of our sport, Joe will be missed. The summer is coming to an end. Scott Anderson pool party will start the season of with members showing of their summer projects. we are putting together a fall series that will make everyone happy. we plan a get to gether with Mike Hance in Houston area this fall plan to attend. we will be looking for a group that's interested in laying out a cross country type track. Diamond Don Rainey has gotten together with Motomama an guess what! Rough Riders an the Vintage veterans are going to have the 1st event of this kind in10 years. we once called it the blue/gray race. Get ready for one really fun event. Diamond Don said the 19th but that's a Saturday well confirm which it is. The Wyman Priddy event will be held at the new and improved North Forty. JIM POMEROY will again be our Grand martial. Jim would like to invite all of you to what may be the best vintage race track in the USA. JIMS GONNA DO A MX SCHOOL . Scott smiley says its good. Lucky us ,we also have two race tracks that's adding us to there Fall program. One is Nocona MX that's good news for all. Its the best dirt in Texas with a very good layout for vintage. The other track is east of DFW in Canton. Buffalo Creek MX , from what I have seen it looks very much like a dream, wide, sandy in some spots loam in others, jumps like we want. Well I only have a few more bits of news. Bucky Patterson like you have made all our day we will support you guys. remember double scheduling has kept us apart for years, am glad its over, we just want to have fun!! Last but not least, lets get to Sandia, Milliken, and Moberly, see ya at the staring line. Remember turn on the Gas Bobby Lucas 50x

South Central Regional Report May 2005

North Forty, May 15th, 2005, (Click for Scores) will go down in Texas Vintage Racing history as the first flat track, TT & Motocross combined event. With 65 motocross and a 148 flat track and TT entries, it was no doubt an event which will grow in entries and interest. Thanks to David Henry and his staff for their great track and support. The VDTRA was really run smoothly thanks to James Taylor, Brett Lambert, and Ed Shade. The kept the races going all night Saturday and Sunday. Brett is our District 41 AMA rep, and as usual, really shined for the AMA. Even Wild Willie was there! Races were really fun to watch. Riders from all over the Central US attended, Gold Star BSAs and Triumph Twins abound, BSA 441’s and AJ’s Yamaha twins and 500 singles, a fast 3/8 mile track and 63 degree temperatures made for one really fun night of Vintage flat track racing. Thanks guys! My pick, Jason Jessup … you rule! Sunday would see both motocross and TT racing at the same time. Again, we had a very good turn out of Vintage MXers. Thanks to all you southern die-hards. Your attendance and support is greatly needed. You are why we keep on truckin! Joe Busby and I kept the moto gates running- starting, staying and flagging. Thanks for your help, Joe! Tim Scully would be the first crash victim as a practice lap went wrong in the gravity cavity. Tim would shake it off and ride all day on his 250 Husky only to go to the hospital the next day. He had 4 fractured ribs and a slight shoulder separation. Tim is a real time Cavalry officer… you know he’s tough! The first moto of the day was a combined 250/500 Sportsman class. Ronnie Welch would come from behind in moto one to beat Mike Hance’s CZ and Ron Munson Maico they would really put on a good race with Hance making a move on Munson in moto two to claim the second overall in 500 Intermediate in the first moto to Clay Fugate’s 501 Maico, in the second moto Clay would get the rubber band from the staring line tangled in his rear wheel. Now we know how much tubing it takes to stop a 501 – let’s see 20’ and ¾ of a mile at 3rd gear speed. It rips off your rear brake arm and locks your wheel. 501 guys beware! Steve Webster his KX500 would be very fast and smooth and rode to a 1 & 1 win. 250 Experts, Matt Mosley KX, Bob Lucas KTM and John Fricke KX would set a blistering pace, running off from the rest of the pack. Lap one say Lucas’ KTM pass Gary Davis’ Bultaco early with Fricke in tow. Fricke passed Lucas on lap two, and closed in on Mosley – the pace again stepped up. Lucas faded (after the race a blown base gasket was found on his KTM) to finish 3rd with Ronnie Welch 1st 500, Gary Davis would cruise to a moto win but DNF in moto two. Todd Gardner and Kenny Bond exchanged moto wins with Gardner getting the over-all in moto two. Scottie Parks returned after his lay off of a year from his broken leg and collar bone to finish a close 3rd with Tim Scully soldiering in to 4th. Bob McNamara cruises to an over-all win with a star performance on his Honda CR 125. He had Steve Williams’ Honda Derrick and Albert Newman’s Yamaha and Walter Parks’ KTM all in a tight battle for positions until Albert Newman high sided. At first we thought Albert had broken his jaw, but it turns out his wife has a good cure… he was not able to return, but had an attitude when he left. Brooks Blair and Lloyd Morgan also gated with the 125s. Now you understand that they are 60+ years old… you would not have known it! Lloyd gave McNamara all he could handle, but gave Bob the overall on the last lap. Brooks Blair ran right in the middle of things as well – Walter Parks on his 125 B also a 60+ rider. These guys are great to watch as the young guns on the 125s finally wore them down, but eat a lot of dirt first…. Old guys can rock! GPIII motos were won by Trevor Parks on his 500 Honda … what a ride! 500 Intermediate was won by Curtis Cook on his YZ465. We have lost Curtis and his wife, Pam. Curtis is retiring from the Navy and will be moving to Oregon, it has really been a great time, we will miss you guys. GPII 250 motos were both won by Mike Snoddy on a Honda. Scott Smiley was the only real challenge to Mike, but DNFed on the first moto. Skip Miller’s KTM & Steve Tomlinson finished 2nd and 3rd with a very fast pace. David Fornier on his 495 KTM, looked fast, but the pace was too. He brought in two 1 and 1 for 1st place 500 Intermediate GP III. Vintage over 50/60 age group, Frank Spangler would beat Brooks Blair for the over 60 Novice. Brooks’ DNF in moto one cost him. Seems he didn’t have enough gas – 5 laps @ the North Forty is almost ten miles, Brooks. 0/50 Intermediate winners were KX team green Tony Mosley and David Allard. These guys are going fast! Chris Barton’s 125 Can Am rode against all 250’s & 400’s all day, finishing 4th overall, but at times ran 2nd for several laps. He was really cookin’ on the 125. Walter Parks’ Penton 125 took 1st in 125 novice, he beat 400’s on that 125. Seems he watched Benoken at Jefferson! Over 40 Expert winner was Mike Hance’s CZ. He would beat his buddy, Ron Munson’s Maico as Ron broke a motor mount on his 440. Maicos don’t break, do they? Gary Davis’ Bultaco, Jim Vaughn’s KX, Kenny Bond’s Husky and Todd Gardner all were in this over-age class as well – Davis won with a 12 over Vaughn, and Bond a 1 & 2 over Gardner. We’ll keep the racing like this… fun, fun, fun. We did have injuries, so you guys heal up quick, we have another event in June! Then summer break, 4th of July @ Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch, you want to be there. As always, check the web for updates. There maybe a change in June. Till next time! See ya @ the starting gate – Remember, turn on the gas 50 X Bobby Lucas

Albert Newman Report Hey TVRC, everything is okay. I had a very minor concussion, a bunch of bruises and knicks, plus both sides of my jaw hurt. I cracked the pipe on my bike and ripped out a couple of spokes so all in all it wasn't too bad I guess. I was going too fast and I think Lloyd cut the corner not knowing I was there...I need better brakes! I'll be back out!

Mike Partain Report Mike Cracked bones in is right lower leg and foot. He tried to pass 3 guys in 1 corner and the bike lost all traction and slud out and landed on top of his right leg.

Hey Skip, Well, I learned Thursday, not only did I crack three ribs, the Concussion, and all the Bruises, from the last race, but a separated shoulder.....Damn that hurt... I was told to stop racing by the doc, of course my reply was, "nope just fix it!" He smiled and stated, "you'll never grow up will you"..... Answer "Hell NO!" Be sure to let every one know I'll BE BACK! Scally

South Central Regional Report April 2005

Well, it sure seems like a long time since you all have heard from me. We had four rain-outs in a row…seems all we had to do was pick a weekend for racing and all we’d get was rain. The North Forty would be our first race, and I understand it was a really fine event. I was not able to make this even due to the fact that some of my friends were returning from Iraq this same day. I was at Fort Hood to welcome them and all other 1st Calvary Division Troopers home. Thanks to all the usual guys for running this event without me, Skip, Joe and David, you guys are great. Thanks to Gary Moore for his article about the event…see TVRC.org The first event for me and many others would be The Jefferson National, April 1st, 2nd and 3rd. By now everyone know how truly fun this event is. Special thanks to those who make this event a must-be-at event….yes, Dan & Francine. Sometimes Vintage Racers really show how big our heart are…. I’m not talking about our love for this sport, but of our kindness for one another. Kay Mann & Jimmy Nations have cancer and a challenge to collect cash donations by regions was issued out by AHRMA officials. I collected almost $1,100.00 in about 2 hours. Special thanks to Terry Gerber, Bob McNamara, and Jim Pomeroy, the Oklahoma Gang, and all of you from Arkansas…. We hope Kay and Jimmy recover very soon. Racing was really fun…. I think just about everyone of us Roughriders came away with some sort of an award. Long time member, but missing for a good number of years, Tony Mosley, made his re-entry to Vintage, we’re glad to see Tony back in the winner’s circle. The list of awards both days is long … you guys make it tough on anyone coming to Texas. We need everyone to go to New Mexico and Missouri. I’d like to thank Mark Brown for his help in bringing our friend Jim Pomeroy out of Texas. Mark is one great guy, even if he is from California. And speaking of California, Brad & Donnie… I don’t recall the last time I had that much fun! Everyone loves those fast guys. Hope to see ya next year. Keep in step with the schedule. Updates are going to added. An event in June at Weatherford MX, a change for the Coyote Texas event in July, and the TMS don’t seem like they will happen. Well, that’s about it. We are still going to run some joint events with our southern friends. We just got our Nextel Cup at TMS out of the way, so get your filters cleaned, check for any changes, we got some good times ahead.

See ya @ the starting gate – Remember, turn on the gas 50 X Bobby Lucas

A bright, sunny day greeted the riders at North Forty on Sunday with just enough wind to keep the dust away. The track was well prepped and is a lot of fun, and fast), to ride. The vintage class had a real battle with Carl Keller on a Bultaco being chased by Scott Anderson on his feather light Suzuki 400. Matt Mosley on a Kawasaki took the lead in the final laps of the first moto after the Bul decided it didn't need an axle nut and left it on the track somewhere. The second vintage moto saw Scott hold off Matt for the win. The GP11 class saw Joe Busby on his Maico being dogged by David Thompson on his Yamaha for the entire moto. Joe didn't get to cruise this one. Bill Davis came in third on his Yamaha. The second moto had Joe pulling a bit more of a lead on David but He stayed close to Joe. In the decade class it was Joe Busby on his Honda Passing Mike Partain on his Yamaha YZ, (from a different decade), with Mark Brown also in the chase. A little way back was Skip Miller, Gary Moore, me), and Michael Snoddy on a very clean ATK air cooled bike in a close chase for the whole moto. I was able to scare everyone around me with my wild use of the whole track and then some extra real estate for passing. After screwing up a turn Skip passed for fourth, me in fifth and Snoddy in sixth. The second moto saw the same at the front but with Mr. Snoddy in fourth, Skip in fifth and me in sixth. On the first lap I passed Skip over the set of double whoops and felt the effects of wind resistance as the wind blowing straight at us nearly looped me out when I jumped. It scared Skip enough that he stayed away from me and it scared me enough I crouched over the jumps from then on. The 125 race went to Joe Busby on his very fast Honda. I hope everyone had a good time at the track. This article was written to the best of my recollection and lousy memory and I am sorry for any errors. Good luck to all of you at Jefferson, Gary Moore
