Is anyone from TVRC going to the Vintage days this July 16 - 18th? I am
planning on attending the event since BMW is the Marque and I will probably
show off my 1975 BMW R90S. I haven't started on my Penton yet but it is only
temporarily on the back burner. I hope to clean out some old stuff and make
the needed room to really go over the Penton even better than the last time.
I might put the headlight back on since it came stock that way. Laura

3-7-2004 That sure was a lot of fun yesterday. You should have seen my
smile under the helmet when I pulled in. Had a rough night sleep. And it was
a long day hobbling around. I am feeling better but need to see a back
cracker. When you figger out the decade places, try to make sure the
trophies go only to the true decade bikes. I know you, me, Rick Peterson,
Ken Walden, Joe Busby and the guy, I think #31 on an old Kawasaki were
oldies. Bob McNamara was buddy riding with Scott Anderson so they don't get
scored for $. Chad ? was on a new Yamaha. You got one heck of a job ahead
figuring out those sheets. I noticed some of the penmanship was really
struggling. I think the thing was a huge success and the track was
excellent. North 40 would be a great place for another GP. There are trails
to the left of the track that could be incorporated in to make it a longer
ride per lap. And have a few straight areas to rest. We really need a unique
event and that would be a great place for 1 hour races vintage and all,
including a le mans start. People will prepare special bikes just for these
things. Thanks again for all the hard work. I would have stayed and helped
clean up but I was not showing how bad my back was really hurting. Team
Sponge Bob. I don't know if anyone was going to do any article here about
the GP, I'll Give the highlights I can remember if someone does. Perfect
weather, outstanding turnout of riders. Due to the rain earlier in the week,
the course was rerouted some which really gave this track a unique feel with
sections running over never before used grassy areas. The start was true to
grand prix racing, standing on the side of the bike with one hand on the
seat. Those who tried to cheat paid the price as Bobby Lucas was quick to
point them out and as they were resetting themselves the flag waved and they
were caught flat footed, ask Joe Busby. Those who didn't practice this start
at least once found themselves kicking the fender or missing the shifter
when they got on. At least one person called the track recording and didn't
look at this site to see if the race was on. That's why Jeff Aklen showed up
in his church clothes. He still had time to go home and get his gear on for
the big modern/decade race. He was able to even pull a holeshot but all of
us behind him got to see him blow right off a turn he had taken many times
before. "If you're gonna get a holeshot, you gotta know what to do with it".
He spent the rest of the race waiting for his friends at the local mud hole
and roosting them all in fun. Scott Anderson was on his way to win the
overall in race 2 but a locked up front brake and a pit stop slowed him
down. The 1/2 hour races really tested us old men and our bikes and at the
end there were quite a few tongues hanging out. The finish scoring turn was
a great place to spectator as that's where a number of people decided to
fall down for all the world to see. With flagmen holding the yellow, white
and checkered flag all in the same corner it was hard to tell what to do. We
need to thank all those who helped score, start, flag and set up the track
for the days event. I don't know enough of the names of the people but some
lines with finish positions of a few of them in the story would help. I sure
would have liked to have a picture of the start I got. I should have gotten
a good start seeing how it was my idea to do it that way. I did get 2nd true
decade behind Busby and don't know what went on behind that.
Spring GP at Burleson and fall 1 hour classic at north 40 in the fall?
I'd help all I could. Thanks again, I had a blast, and my back feels a bit
better. Gary Moore |

Burleson Grand Prix
When the announcement of the 30 minute + one lap motor format was
broadcast on the website, calls started coming in. What does it mean…three
30 minute motos + 1 lap? Well, we programmed the event in advance – Vintage
would run first 30+1 lap, Historic and Grand Prix second and Ultma last -
Breaks in between races for rest. Some want to ride two classes. Once rode
all three… yes, an hour and a half + 3 laps….that’s an Iron Man! The Vintage
classes had a full gate with 25 combined skilled riders on the line. The
starts would be one of the most fun parts of the day. Rider standing to the
right of his bike, engine running, and left hand on the back of their seat!
Starts were fun to do and watch – after all, 30 min. + 1 is a long time. The
fun part of riding & watching was that there was racing everywhere one
looked. For 30+minutes, the track was in a buzz. Passing , jumping, action
was everywhere, at the half way point, I gave the sign… some said later,
they thought it was the last lap. Jay Navero just ran away with it. Being
young does help. He passed everyone then lapped them again. Scott Anderson
hung in there till his front break locked up. Carl Keller drove out from
East Texas and finished second to Jay in the 250 Expert! Chris McCarthy put
his Husky in 1st for the 250 Novice class. Wish the Navy would leave him at
home more… we might have something here! Clay Fugate seemed to be riding
stronger in the end than in the beginning. He took 1st in Open Novice on his
400 Maico. Yes, a Maico can run 30 minutes + 1 lap. Mike Snoddy put on the
Honda war face and placed 1st in the 250 Intermediate with Robert Sojka
making an appearance to claim 1st in Open Intermediate on his 360 Yamaha.
Chris (Chili Pepper) Richardson on his upper fast CZ showed up and took 2nd
place in the Vintage Open Expert class. Ronnie Welch on his 400 CZ came in a
not-so-distant third, and even with brake problems. Scott Anderson would
take the win on a Suzuki 400 TM… cool! The Historic GPI and GPII class would
be next. This might be hard to believe, young Jay Navaro put in 20 laps on
his 495 KTM. He was challenged early by David Thompson & his 465 YZ, but
youth after 20 minutes pulled away for the win. One of the best races of the
day was with Scott Anderson – RM370, Ronnie Snyder – Bultaco 370 and Bob
McNamara – Honda 125. Bob was relentless on his 125 Honda, at the halfway
the order remained the same, but all three were in a battle – none giving an
inch. You could say a blanket could cover the three of them. Bob managed to
get under Ron Snyder at the 20 minute mark, then Anderson would fall to
Bob’s 125. This type of racing was not only fun to do, but to watch as well!
Ronnie would not give up to the 125 and passed Anderson, but ran out of time
to catch Bob. Another good race was between Skip Miller, Larry Shope and
David Burgess. While they finish in that order, racing was intense for the
full moto. Ronny Snyder RM 250 would finish 1st over all in the 250 Expert.
Ken Walden, Honda mounted, finished a solid 2nd…. Closely followed by Bill
Davis for a 3rd in the 500 Expert class. Clay Coburn and Mike Stovall
finished 1st in the 125 & 250 Novice. Mike Snoddy brought home his 250 CR
Honda for a 1st in the 250 Intermediate. David Henderson finished 1st in the
500 Novice…. Albert Newman, 1st in the 125 Novice… way to go! Hopefully
we’ll see all of you again in Jefferson. Check the website for the results
and information for the upcoming events. Let’s all support the National in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Remember to turn on the gas….. See ya @ the
starting line! Bobby Lucas 50X
P.S. Welcome to new member, Lloyd Morgan, he’s a 60+ Expert… Lloyd rides
Maico’s!
So till next time, remember – turn on the gas! See ya @ the starting gate

This Region’s National @ Jefferson was the best ever! Thanks to Don Rainey
and company for their efforts. I know that everyone had a great time. The
North Forty was next, and it also was a great time. Supercross on Saturday
night then Vintage MX @ the best track ever. David Henry had invited the
flat track racers also and what a turn out. Forty plus entries + 70 +
Vintage MX’ers. Racers from all over Texas and Oklahoma brought both flat
trackers and MX bikes. David Thompson and Ronnie Snyder raced to first in
several flat track and MX events. How cool is that, one Moto Vintage MX 20
minutes later, racing a flat tracker…. Both had a blast and won in both
types of events! June 6th we will again have an MX and flat track combined
event @ Waco. Waco Eagles have a ½ mile track, and have added some new
sections to its MX track. You don’t want to miss this event. May 8th is our
Old Fort Dallas event. This is going to be a really fun event. Mother’s Day
is the next day, so bring MOM, she will love this old west town… Lots to see
and do! Last but not least is the Texas Motor Speedway event. This year we
will be setting up an exhibit only. Next year we will be looking for a
racing event. Stay tuned for developments…. It’s looking good and should be
really fun. The Wyman Priddy event is going to again be @ the North Forty
this year. Allen Jackson, who was Wyman’s factory mechanic, has kept one of
Wyman’s KX450’s all these years. He has kindly loaned us Wyman’s KX for
display. This will be a really special event again this year. Jim and Ron
Pomeroy are to attend and so should you! See ya @ the starting gate &
remember, turn on the gas! Bobby Lucas |
