TVRC SPRINGS INTO ACTION IN SPRING SERIES

By Helon Wheels

BURLESON, TX,/APR. 25th: Usually on an 'iffy' weather day the ironmen of old
motocross racing fill the park. The honey-do list must have long on this
particular race day as only 32 entered vintage machines were logged on the
race result sheets for Round 2 of the Texas Vintage Racing Club Spring Series.
Big Dave Allard on board his KX400 and CZ mounted Wailing Ronnie Welch
stretched off the start toward the first turn with Big Dave nailing the
holeshot in the first moto of the combined Vintage Intermediate and Masters
class, leading the Master's gate onto the Burleson MX course. Motor Gremlins
leaped onto Welch's bike in the first turn, putting him at the back of the
pack as Intermediate Bill Regan snapped up the number two position on his
Bultaco. Regan raced at the rear wheel of Big Dave for two laps before he
could get around him for the lead in the first section of track at the top
of lap 3. Chris Richardson held on to third, followed by Skippy [Skip
Miller] in for fourth on his Penton and Huskey mounted Michael Snoddy in
fifth, while AMA District Rep, Britt Lambert held down sixth place on his
Maico.
Regan, Big Dave and Richardson began to pull away from the rest of the
vintage pack as Skippy raced alone in third, several seconds in front of
Snoddy when the checkered flag came out.
The second moto saw Wailing Welch on a repaired machine in the holeshot
position, chased feverishly by Bob McNamara, Regan, Richardson and Big Dave.
All stayed close together for two laps before a little terrifirma began to
distance the riders. Welch never looked back as he took the checkered flag
first, followed by Regan and McNamara.
Welch's first moto DNF would only net him fourth place points in the
Master division, while McNamara used his 3-2 for the overall first place
spot. Richardson gathered up a 2-3 for second with Allard taking third by
way of a 1-4 tally.
Regan won the Intermediate category with a pair of aces, followed
consistently in both moto's by Skippy, Snoddy and Lambert.
The Vintage Small Bore saw Bob McNamara back at the gate on his Honda
Elsinor and in the win position for the class. Mike Partain took the win on
a Honda in the Small Bore GP with a 1-1 finish to Cris Barton's 2-2 and Ken
Walden's 3-3, both on Yamaha's.
Billy Smith had the fastest bike on the track, a Honda, taking the GP
II Master win with a double moto first place finish, joined by Maico mounted
Joe Busby in second, Cris Barton on a Husky third and David Thompson on his
Yamaha fourth.
Chad Conner won the GP II Intermediate class on his UniTrack Kawasaki
with a 1-1 score to Rick Peterson's (Yam) 3-2 for second, Eric Bennett's
(Yam) 4-3 for third, John Doskocil 2-5 for fourth and Ken Walden's (Yam) 5-4
for fifth while Dave Fournier (Maico), Jim Martin (Hon) and Jay Jackson
(Yam) rounded out the class sixth through eighth.
