At Burleson: Jeff Acklen scored high marks for a perfect pirouette right off of the gate. Lowest score was a 9.9 from a visiting judge. The unconfirmed rumor has it; Skip is printing my e-mails as a diabolic plot to get some quality help elected or at least an intern. If the calvary does not arrive, he may be reduced to printing my tech tips. Let me warn you, a lot bad things transpire in my garage between a dirt bike and myself. It may be the template for the original screen play to the movie "Fight Club". After my best efforts fail, I inevitably resort to a little "Red Green" action. Only substituting silicon sealer for duct tape. Finally, to top it all off, I use a lifeline and call a friend. In an unspoken agreement, the bike stays in my friends well-equipped workshop, safe from the "Little Shop of Horrors". My friend and I usually part with the comment, "Do you get in a fight with everything you work on?" I would really like to tell him, but I cant. This is the first in hopefully a series of rider profiles. If you wish to be featured in this venue, please contact Skip Miller or Robert Glover. Im interviewing myself first, so everyone will know who I am. If no one volunteers to be the next victim, watch out as I may call on you!!! Anyone who has watched me ride knows I am proof you do not need to be fast to be interviewed. Personal Statistics Rider: Robert L. GloverAge: older than dirt Better Half: DeDe the wife (still supports my riding even after marrying me in a fresh cast) Other Half: Robert the son First Bike: age 9, Cushman Scooter with a suicide clutch and tank shift financed by mowing lawns Current Bike: 81 CR125, 100% rebuilt Racing Experience: 6 years spread over a decade or so (3 years of which was vintage from 89 92) Favorite or Memorable Race Experience: There are so many. Competing with John Burkett and the year Kelly White finished third in the vintage series aboard an AT1 125 Yamaha. I have been out of racing for some time. Im really excited to be back. Ive really missed vintage motocross. Now if it would just stop raining so I can race!!! I acquired my first vintage bike from Jack and Laura Thompson in 1989. At that time Jack and Laura worked tirelessly to promote and ensure everything went according to plan for a newly formed club. It was a great concept. Until TVRC, everyone raced a new generic bike and few people really knew each other at the races. Due to the club Jack started, weve all made friends that will last a lifetime. The TVRC races became family oriented events. I hope youll find the following article interesting and enjoy it as much as I did. By the way, Thanks, JT and Laura!! On 9-13-01 Robert Glover, longtime rider with the TVRC and friend to all, traded his wheels for wings. Passing away from liver disease. I've known Robert and his family for 10 years and became close friends with him. He, like most of us, began racing in the early 70's on what we now call vintage bikes. He rode a variety of diferrent bikes with the club and didn't care what it was, he just liked to ride. Even in the last weeks he was optimistic about getting better and was even talking about riding again once he was able to. It is proven, you can't take the race out of a racer. He leaves behind his wife DeeDee and 13 year old son Robert. They planned for this and are well taken care of. He will be missed. I lost a good friend and we lost one of our own. Gary Moore Name: Jack Thompson
Founder of TVRC Served three terms as President of TVRC Age: 42 Current Bike: 125 Penton Six Days Robert: How did TVRC actually start? Ive heard several versions. Jack: Bill Newkirk and I started discussing it at Burleson MX. Later we met at my house and formed further ideas. The first race was actually an exhibition at Mosier Valley night track. Bill Newkirk on a 450 Husky, Tom Aylett on a 125 Penton and I rode a PKW 125. These were the bikes I had collected over the years. All three of us worked at Yamaha of Texas at that time. Lynn Nickerson sold the idea of the club over the PA system. Robert: Once you start a business or club, it takes on a life of its own. What do you think of the current organization? Jack: I think it is great. I am happy TVRC can coexist with other clubs. Now we can attend combined events. Something I did not envision in the early years of TVRC. It is great that the club stood the test of time. Robert: You have talked of coming back. What class will you ride? Jack: The small bore class, definitely. I am going to hang out and enjoy racing! Robert: Who was your favorite competitor? Jack: Rick Ostricker Robert: Who was your most personable competitor? Jack: Richard "Booger" Martin Robert: I know you and Bill Newkirk started the ball rolling. Was it just the two of you? Jack: No, No way. Laura, my wife, invested great amounts of time and energy into making this club happen. I cant say enough about that. Robert: Laura used to race with us at some of the events. That was great pr for the club too! Jack: Yes. It was a great time in our lives, but it came at a cost. It was a second job you worked for the love of it. Laura backed me in every way. Ill always be grateful for the stresses and strains she endured supporting me in this endeavor.

With my first approach to the POG tent there was a smiling John Penton with an outreached hand welcoming us boys up from Texas. Pointing to the exhibit he said "Look at this, I cant believe the job they have done." Laughing he told me that he didnt remember these guys working as hard when they worked for him as employees! As he signed a pair of 77 MC5 side covers for me, he said that it was interesting you could go back 30 years and his autograph still looked the same. Later I thought with all the change he brought about that some things remained constant. Somehow he knew which ones to change to make things better. This was my pinnacle of events with meeting with the famed Penton riders of the past. Every one was just like an old buddy with just a moments introduction. Carl Cranke pointing out places he broke frames and parts he designed for the Sachs engine instead of raising a family, but now he does. Jack Penton telling me of his Son now living and working in Texas near me. If that didnt remind me of that we had lived through a generation he next told me he has recently from the same Son become a grandparent! Later at the AMA dinner he asked if they could use my bikes in the show for the parade laps, like there could be two answers. Imagine how an old dirt biker from Texas felt when asked if Gold medal ISDT riders can ride my Pentons. Paul Danick who persuaded Mid Ohio security to escort two trucks to the POG campground an hour after closing Thursday 10:00 p.m. He also bought one of my exhibits PENTON tanks for the Jackpiner he is restoring. Once again Kip Kern exampled a perfectly restored Penton. My socks arent that clean brand new! Dane Lienbach explaining the rudiments of ignition and explaining to a friend with me why PVL had no adapters for CZs. Doug Wilford telling stories of his hosting of the European riders while they were in the USA. Al Buehner patiently but intently administrating it all. Al joined Bob, Bobs son Brandon, and I to the Ashland County Flat Track and bought the whole carload a ticket at the gait. I saw a sunburned Ron Carbaugh loan Ron Munson his sun hat to help protect him from any more pain. After 4 Days they looked the same to me. Seeing John Penton 100 yards ahead of everybody on the parade lap WFO. I wasnt disappointed that John didnt ride the MX exhibition lap. Motorcycles had a way of disappearing out from under you. I had a couple of close calls but Bob Lucas never saw his leave him in the Penton only moto and still doesnt know what happened to put him on the ground on a short rocky straight. He is a 10 year expert in vintage racing. Having Jack and GiGi Penton help pack and load our final items, including 5 Pentons at the POG tent. This was 6:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon! The crowning moment was to see John, upon my request with no assistance climb onto our flatbed trailer to sign the tanks of the last motorcycles to leave. I told him I felt guilty about asking him now. John had been for four days standing and signing anything put before him. He just said "thats okay, you boys were busy all day." John didnt jump down off the trailer like the time at our Texas banquet he hopped off the 3 foot stage, but unassisted again he climbed down extended his hand to wish us farewell. The character of all these men is still something to be admired and live up to. The reality and excitement of being with these men and as many Penton fans riders owners and admirers was more than was planned expected or envisioned by anyone. Driving off going different directions Jack and I waved at a high five, our arms too short to connect I heard bye Skip. I didnt look back looking forward to a next time but I dont think ever a better time. Thanks to Bob Lucas as President of the Texas Vintage Racing Club 9 years ago regenerated my enthusiasm for restoring riding and racing. . I enjoy and appreciate all the work of the Penton Owners Group. It still exhibits the pride and professionalism of Penton. Oh yeah, My 1974 250 Hare Scrambler ran practice and 7 motos with only adding gas. I did get a bum start on my first O/50 moto when she loaded up on the line. It was probably the riders fault, like Penton Central told me when I broke my first, but only one in two years racing my 125 Six Says, Sachs Penton shift key. Thanks for the exhibit, the dinners, the help, the hospitality and the friendships. Skip Miller
From The Pres: Well, I guess I have fell down on my duties of the newsletter, this year has really gone by quick. For the ones that missed the Arkansas race, it was interesting to say the least. By interesting I mean the pigpen in the middle of the track. We had a good turn out considering the distance driven by everyone but we missed out on the trophy by 3 points. Oh well, there is always next year. The next race was supposed to be at Swan but unfortunately it was rained out. I try to talk Trey into going ahead and letting us race but the turnout probably would not have been very good. Maybe next time. The last race of the first half of the season was at Burleson. Yes, it was a last minute race but the turn out was very good. Considering the heat, it went very well and there were even people from Houston that showed up. Mid Ohio was the next race. If you have never been there you definitely need to go at least once. We had 10 riders from the Club there and I believe we all spent more money than we wanted to but it was well worth it. I didn't get a chance to buy anything this year but there is always next year. GREEN ACRES GRAN PRIX BENTONVILLE ARK 5-21-2000
From the Trenches For your information by default you now a new President or an old President again, Bob Lucas. Britt and company gave us all a good year. During last years election voting club members decided to move the yearly banquet and elections to the end of December. I will maintain the office of President for the remainder of our year and one half term. Joe Busby is now our Vice President, a move that we all should agree to. The new schedule provides us lots of racing and after a Summer layoff machines have got to be begging to run. A few new tracks have been added and that GP or Hare Scramble you Guys keep asking for is finally going to happen. Virgin terrain and cooler weather along with TVRC and EVO riders competing for a series this fall should draw out the crustiest old boys out to play. Leave the line with your gas on Bob Lucas
