Name: Jack Thompson
Founder of TVRC Served three terms as President of TVRC Age: 42 Year 2000 Current Bike: 125 Penton Six Days Robert: How did TVRC actually start? Ive heard several versions. Jack: Bill Newkirk and I started discussing it at Burleson MX. Later we met at my house and formed further ideas. The first race was actually an exhibition at Mosier Valley night track. Bill Newkirk on a 450 Husky, Tom Aylett on a 125 Penton and I rode a PKW 125. These were the bikes I had collected over the years. All three of us worked at Yamaha of Texas at that time. Lynn Nickerson sold the idea of the club over the PA system. Robert: Once you start a business or club, it takes on a life of its own. What do you think of the current organization? Jack: I think it is great. I am happy TVRC can coexist with other clubs. Now we can attend combined events. Something I did not envision in the early years of TVRC. It is great that the club stood the test of time. Robert: You have talked of coming back. What class will you ride? Jack: The small bore class, definitely. I am going to hang out and enjoy racing! Robert: Who was your favorite competitor? Jack: Rick Oestriker Robert: Who was your most personable competitor? Jack: Richard "Booger" Martin Robert: I know you and Bill Newkirk started the ball rolling. Was it just the two of you? Jack: No, No way. Laura, my wife, invested great amounts of time and energy into making this club happen. I cant say enough about that. Robert: Laura used to race with us at some of the events. That was great pr for the club too! Jack: Yes. It was a great time in our lives, but it came at a cost. It was a second job you worked for the love of it. Laura backed me in every way. I’ll always be grateful for the stresses and strains she endured supporting me in this endeavor. |
