The mid-Ohio Ahrma National was not kind
to some of our Texas vintage racers. Now listed on injured
reserve; Rick Jordan; broken collarbone, our Aussie visitor friend
Phil; broken collarbone, Chris Richardson; broken arm, and most
injured of all, Britt Lambert; broken hip. Britt was to have
surgery on Tuesday 7/31, in Mansfield, Ohio. A 1st turn pile-up
took out both Chris and Britt at the same time. The info I have
gathered came from Bob Lucas and Bill Davis, both of whom made the
trip. More later.

| Tommy Montgomery 4/1/06
This is information that I read on the Vinduro
discussion board from Harry LaClair.
I spoke with Tommy's wife last night after reading what Rico posted
here. She said that Tommy crashed hard at DD's and broke his femur,
elbow and shoulder. He has been pinned with screws and is still in
the hospital in East Texas. His sister and brother in law are there
with him. He should be transferred to Shannon Hospital in San Angelo
sometime in the next two or three days.
This is incredibly bad news, but the sun is shining as he's should be
up and about soon, hopefully.

Tommy Montgomery 4/11/06
I went to visit TM today. He is in good spirits, but in
much pain. You wouldn't know it to look at him though. He is managing
his pain, but there is quite a bit. I walked in during his PT today,
and I was 1: shocked to learn the extent of his injuries, and 2: shocked
to see him doing the PT.
He broke his left femur, which was repaired with several pieces of
stainless and about 40 screws. He broke his left shoulder, which was
repaired with several pieces of stainless, and about 60 screws.
He also broke his right elbow, which was repaired with 12" of stainless,
and about 16 screws. He has a beautiful 15 inch scar on his elbow which
is stapled shut with about 30 staples. There are no
casts to be seen. He showed me his x rays <shudder>. I am impressed
with his resolve and the way he manages pain.
He has pictures of the crash. The crash happened on Sunday during the
MX. He said that he was tired, and considered not riding, but the
desire was very high. He pancaked the CZ right after a tabletop. The
photos are beautiful, a 3/4's forward shot showing him flying through
the air in great form, then a 180 turn of the camera shows him impacting
the ground face/chest/shoulder first with
his left shoulder, (which promptly broke) then his left hip, which
caused his left leg to snap the femur and his leg and boot to bend over
his back, then he rotated slightly and slammed into the ground with his
right elbow which then broke.
The ground into which he slammed was hard dirt. There was some dust
thrown up by his impact, but not much (I'd say it looked like sandy
concrete).
The CZ was not injured. Tommy said that the pain was immediate, and
huge. A fellow racer in his moto was a thoracic surgeon, and she
stopped immediately, and provided him emergency care. Tommy said that
he probably broke her eardrums with his pain.
He's going to be in PT for a while, I think. He's looking forward to
coming home, in a week or so. I delivered your greetings and well
wishes, and will be returning to visit him again this week. He
has family and friends close, and will eventually recover.
He also had a great photo of him on the Bultaco during the XC on
saturday (IIRC?). He said it wasn't running as well as it could have
been running.
Just to let you all know how he's doing.

Barry Don Callaway 5/19/06
Hey guys, I got some good news about B.D. today. Eric Berg, a friend of mine
saw him a few days ago. He got a short break from rehab. Went down to the
car lot, got on the mike, and opened the car auction. Eric sez he's using a
walker, talking slow, still has the sense of humor, and is generally making
good progress. Gonna take time. Anyway, maybe you guys can post the info
about the "Bad Dog".

Barry Don Callaway 2/15/06
My name is Christian Michael Callaway and I am Barry
Don Callaway's oldest son. I saw the bit that you
guys put in your web-site about my father and I
thank you for that. Just to clear up any
misunderstandings about the wreck. It happened on
the 14th of February in the afternoon, in front
of his car auction. He was testing out his new
450cc when he feel from the bike in a left turn. He
was not warring a helmet and was slammed down on his
right side. No one saw the wreck so we do not know
how fast he ways going but he was thrown a little of
30 feet and bounced twice when his head hit the
highway pavement. He was in the ditch. He has a
fractured skull, broken nose, broken scapula,
shoulder, clavicle, 9 broken ribs, fractured hip
and swelling of the brain, all on the right side.
His right lung collapsed and his liver is slit from
a broken rib we think. His is slowly coming out of
his coma and is starting to become more aware of his
surroundings. He is not able to talk yet and his
motor skills are not back to normal yet. He does
know that he is in the hospital, that he was in a
motorcycle wreck, and when he was asked if he loved
his wife Tami, he puckered up his lips. It is all a
matter of time and in Gods hands. Please keep him
in your prayers. And thank you again.

Curtis Keller Update
3/5/06 Update: Curtis made it out to the North Forty Race with his
father and brother in tow. He is looking good and there was some goofing
around between him and his brother. He will continue rehab in Irving over
the next year. Good Luck Curtis!
2/28/06 Update Curtis Keller
Tuesday Feb 28 2006 Papasitas' Restaurant Dallas Texas. Curtis was
eating talking and standing on his own. Bright eyed he discussed the
supercross schedule and his daily routines and showed off his body moves.
Mentally he was doing double digit multiplication. He is living at a an
assisted living quarters in Los Colinas with his mom and endures 4 hours a
day physical therapy to regain dexterity. Family and friends visit on the
weekends. This weekend Carl and he intend to attend the North Forty race as
spectators for this weekends outdoor trip. It was a true miracle to witness
a happy child still physically struggling after the trauma and treatments he
has endured. Physical therapy is working to get him playing basketball, one
of his favorite sports before their done. Halleluiah!

It is with heavy heart that I learned of Grant Patterson’s untimely death
today. The Grant Patterson I knew was a class act for his years. His
participation in a vintage event always bettered it. Respectful, controlled
and fast; A racer’s racer. He transcended the generation gap and was one of
us. Godspeed Grant – We will miss you.
As you know, I am waaaay north of my beloved Texas and not able to attend
his funeral.
VMX brothers - know that your sons are our nephews and we are a family
across the miles.

Folks, I don't have any answers for you I'm sorry. At this time I do not
know what happened to Grant, I just know we lost a very special young
person. He was one of those kids you wish there were more of. Every time I
rode with Grant I came away with a smile on my face. As he became faster
than me he always showed me respect when we were out on the track
together...you just don't find that anymore!
God Speed Grant, all of us will miss your terribly!
Here is the funeral information I have at this time..
SERVICES FOR GRANT WILL BE AT WALTRIP FUNERAL HOME, 1415 CAMPBELL,

Curtis Keller 12 year old son of Carl Keller was transported
by Care Flight to Children's Hospital in Dallas, Texas unconscious and is in
an medical induced coma for his head injury received in a one bike practice
crash Saturday Nov 19. at Swan Raceway. His room is 1114 with a
family visiting room on the 11th floor. His family is standing by 24 hours
and ask only for your prayers and good wishes for Curtis' recovery. We pray
that this condition is temporary and God will him back to health. As of
Wednesday Nov 23 there is no change.
Nov 25 was Curtis 13th birthday. His ICU room is
decorated with cards and picture collage from his school friends wishing him
well.
Nov 30 Improving and breathing on his own he is still unconscious. The
doctors are getting him to respond to verbal commands. He is gripping with
his hands and wiggled his toes on his dad's command while I was visiting.
That was truly overwhelming to see him acknowledge us still not awake.
Doctors plans are to try to wake him from the medical sleep in a few more
days.
Carl has plans to sell his bike collection. If you know what he has
and can use it, you can buy it.
Dec 22, 2005
Curtis Keller has moved to Our Children's Place children's recovery
therapy house Swiss Ave and Hall in Dallas. He is waking and responding to
instructions but far from normally alert. It will be an extended recovery
time. |

Joe Busby Senior Died today September 24 2004at 6:00A.M. at his retirement
home in Whitney, Texas from bone cancer diagnosed this summer. Joe was 78
years old and was the favorite father figure of all the TVRC racers. What we
do may not even exist if fathers like Joe didn't take there son racing that
new sport called Motocross in the 60's and 70's and spawn racers like Jammin'
Joe. Until the last season Joe came to most DFW races and now we know why he
hasn't been attending as much. He will always be missed.

Skip; I appreciate you and Bobby Lucas giving me a call, and I also appreciate all
of the help we received loading our trailer. I have a badly separated shoulder, torn AC
ligament, as well as other ligaments and tendons; but my orthopedic surgeon feels that
surgery would not gain me any more mobility and would be a very invasive operation. So
I"m in a sling for eight weeks. The hand was broken and was cast today. It's been an
awesome season, I've made lots of friends, learned a lot, and am proud to a TVRC rider.
Looking forward to seeing you guys in January. I appreciate all of your prayers. Larry

You know when I was looking at that bike earlier in the day I thought it would be a
good candidate for an after market swing arm to reduce flex. When I saw the crash it
looked like a cartoon dog and cat fight because out of the dust I just saw flashes of
yellow and arms and legs.

Two of the industry's finest...Grant Smith & Mark Maness of Honda of Houston and
Lake Whitney Motocross were run down and killed. Mark was killed instantly...Grant died
Friday June 28 2002.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOUSTON -- Two bicyclists were killed after a hit-and-run accident, authorities said.
The accident happened shortly before 9:45 p.m. Thursday June 27 2002, near the
intersection of Chimney Rock Road and Kingsbrook Road in southwest Houston.
Police told News2Houston that the two men were riding mountain bikes down Chimney Rock
Road in a marked bike lane, single file, when witnesses said that they saw a light green
Ford pickup bear down on them.
"The truck veered over into the bike lane, striking both bicyclists (and) knocking
them both off their bikes," Officer Rosalee Stafford said.
One man was killed instantly, and the other was thrown 48 feet, authorities said.
Paramedics rushed the injured man to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he died hours
later.
According to witnesses, the driver of the truck didn't slow down, and just sped away
into the dark.
"The bicycles took the brunt of the impact, of course, but the vehicle will show
some damage," Stafford said.
Police said that the damage would be on the right-front part of the pickup, which
witnesses described as a green Ford.
The accident is under investigation.
The victims, Grant Smith and Mark Manus, were co-owners of a popular motorbike store,
Honda of Houston.
"They were always a close group. They did a lot of things like riding together --
bicycles and motocross," said Ken Bodenhamer, a customer. "They were like a
family group. Everybody was close. They were close with their customers."
The hit-and-run driver could face a failure to stop and render aid charge, a driving
while intoxicated charge, or a more serious charge, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Houston Police Department's Hit-And-Run
Squad at (713) 247-4065.

ATENTION, EVERYONE Billy Grossi, an AHRMA and AMA member, was severly
injured in the Sears Point race the weekend of April 27 & 28. He suffered a leg broken
in 5 places, cracked ribs, dislocated shoulder and concussion, and spent 3 days in the
hospital. Any one knowing Billy knows he is a fine person, an excelent racer andan
all-around nice guy.
The reason for this letter is to let you know that Billy is a working
stiff-tile layer by trade. He has a wife, a new born baby and two daughters to support,
and it will be a long time before Billy can go back to work.
I am asking everyone to donate $5 or $10 minimum to the Billy Fund to
help him and his family in their time of need. Billy and his family need our support and
surley will appreciate the help. Maybe we will see him back in the next year or so. Please

| A fellow rider has moved on to the track in the sky. Stephen Griner
died racing his bike last Sunday the (April)7th in Jacksonville. Apparently he was WFO at
the time cause I was told that he lost control and hit a tree and died instantly. He was a
friend but I haven't been in close contact lately and not sure if he was doing cross
country but that was his usual thing. He was one of the nicest guys in the world with a
wife and kids, a real beautiful family. We need to think about the fact that this kind of
thing can happen when we are racing somebody for next to last place and trying to force
them off line or some such. When I first met him he said he knew some of the guys in TVRC
so I thought you should hear about it in case you or any of the other guys that have been
in the club a while knew him. Bummed out in Lipan, Jay Jackson 30 |

Hi Skip,
Thanks for your concern over pats ankle. Actually, shes doing very well. We stopped off at the Emergency Room in Austin on
the way home (along with everyone else with a cold!!) for x-rays and it is just a sprain. Last weekend she took a 3rd in the
Saturday womens class for the AMA District 20 Hare Scrambles Series (modern bikes),
and it was big fun for us (first Hare Scrambles). I
am really proud that not only does she get out and ride, but rides very well. Now, I just need to get her to like the MX a
little more, as she prefers the off-road. Anyways,
we plan to make some more of the TVRC events, and I have to say the track was awesome(Burleson
MX), as well as the people we met from the club.
