February 10, 2002 Oak Hill MX Park By Bobby Lucas Coordinator Oak Hill greeted the Rough Riders Regional Series with open arms, but old man winter wasn't so kind. Temperatures in the upper 20's and a wind of 25 to 30 mph challenged all who would race. Three inches of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday had melted to prepare a moist and loamy track. The weatherman had promised sunny & 68 for Sunday. We all have been fooled by mother nature. The Combined Sportsman Class was the first moto, and KX mounted Mark Brown would pull away from the pack and cruise to a well deserved victory. Second Moto was the Combined Classes of Grand Prix 125's & 250's. Billy Smith 250 Honda and Sean Knack 250 Maico would motor away from the pack as Joe Busby riding a 125 Honda would dominate the 125 class. Third Moto, 500 cc Expert Grand Prix class again saw Joe Busby 490 Maico victorious with David Thompson's 465 YZ in tow. These two would develop there own pace and dominate the Oak Hill course. Close racing for 3rd thru 7th would last for the 4 lap event, sorting out only on the last half of the last lap . really good racing. Historic and Ultima classes would be the 4th Moto and Mark Brown, Chris Barton, and Sean Knack would dominate for 4 laps in very close racing. Second Moto Sportsman Class would see Mark Brown, Jeff Hardin, KX Riders, persued closely by Bobby Lucas on a Pinton. Pace was fast and furious with Mark getting second moto win and the over all. Scott Anderson would put his 400 TM to 4th overall and 1st 400 Sportsman expert. Dave Fournier Maico, Tim Wallis Maico, and Mark Miller Suski race close for both motos. Wallis had to turn on the reserve on the last lap to win. Second Moto Grand Prix 250 & 125 again saw Billy Smith & Sean Knack out front. Busby had to come from behind after a poor start, but led @ the end of the first lap. Can Am mounted, Chris Barton, challenged all who would come near. Young Eric Heidman put his Suzuki in to second place, and looked to be there for good. But his shift lever would strip on the shaft on the last half of the last lap. Ken Walden rode very smoothly to finish 3 & 3 on the Yamaha 125 YZ. Grand Prix 500's 2nd Moto proved to the faster than the 1st. This Oak Hill track is better in the second moto than the 1st. Joe Busby, David Thompson, and Bobby England Suzuki 400 all stepped up the pace. With Ken Walden Husky 430 in tow & Bobby Lucas KTM 420 in tow, very close racing. The last moto, Chris Barton RM 250 and Jeff Hardin Yamaha battled to the end. Awards were presented to class winners furnished by the TVRC. June's National should prove to be a really good event. Check out the web site. Dan Rainey come out to test the waters, take photos, and report back. He's pumped about the event. Note to all trials riders, Russ Corum, founder of SCAHTR, came out to recon for the National Trials. Planning is in the early stages, so as to provide a challenging course. Those to came understand, "The harder the course, the more rewarding the triumph." See ya @ the North Forty -- Vintage trials will be held here so bring it along too. Remember to turn on the gas! See ya at the starting gate. Home 2002 Schedule |
